Groom’s Bonus Tradition

Iroquois Steeplechase Continues Groom’s Bonus Tradition, Sponsored by Don & Sara Jo Gill

Nashville, TN — The Iroquois Steeplechase is pleased to continue the tradition of honoring the dedicated grooms whose tireless work makes steeplechase racing possible. Since its introduction in 2024, the Groom’s Bonus has been a meaningful way to acknowledge the commitment and expertise these professionals bring to the sport.

For the 2026 race day on Saturday, May 9, grooms will once again be recognized with bonuses for each winning mount. The groom of the first-place finisher in the featured Iroquois Steeplechase race will receive a $1,000 bonus, with $500 bonuses awarded to grooms of winning horses in every other race on the card.

This initiative continues to be made possible through the generous support of Don and Sara Jo Gill, whose passion for equestrian sport and appreciation for the craft of horse care helped establish the award as a meaningful tradition.

Grooms are the backbone of race preparation — from daily conditioning and turnout to last-minute details before post time. The Groom’s Bonus recognizes not only their technical skill but also the devotion they bring to the horses in their charge.

“We introduced this bonus to say thank you and to spotlight the crucial role grooms play in our sport,” said Don Gill during the first announcement. “Their dedication truly makes a difference on race day.”

The Iroquois Steeplechase continues its legacy as one of America’s premier jump racing events, blending thrilling competition with deep respect for the people and horses that define this sport.
