Abaan Clinches Breakthrough Grade 1 Win in the Calvin Houghland Iroquois
In a dramatic finish at the 84th running of the Iroquois Steeplechase, Abaan surged from the back of the pack to defeat champion Snap Decision and secure his first Grade 1 victory. Under the experienced guidance of jockey Bernie Dalton and trained by his wife, Kate Dalton, the eight-year-old gelding—owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Daigneault Thoroughbreds—delivered a powerful stretch run to win the $250,000 Calvin Houghland Iroquois Stakes. The race, held annually at Percy Warner Park, is the crown jewel of the spring steeplechase season and drew top competitors from across the sport. Abaan’s victory denied Snap Decision a historic fourth Iroquois title and capped a remarkable rise for the former flat racer, who has now won four stakes races since switching careers in 2023. The win cements Abaan’s place among steeplechasing’s elite and adds a new chapter to the rich legacy of the Iroquois Steeplechase.

The Iroquois Steeplechase is a full day of racing at Percy Warner Park in Nashville, TN. The mission of the Iroquois Steeplechase is to manage and produce an annual world-class horse race that benefits Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt and other local community non-profits, as well as promote the sport of steeplechasing.
